TAs the floor housing the Mattel Childtens Hospital at UCLA, the Fifth Floor is designed for children, ranging from neonates to adolescents/young adults. In addition, the floor will house Womens Services related to obstetrics.
The Childrens Hospital orientation will be to the west as that is directly connected to the Childrens Hospital entrance and lobby on the Ground Floor via the west elevators. The Pediatric ICU and Critical Isolation beds as well as the typical med/surg pediatric nursing units will be located in the southwest and southeast pods. Each nursing unit also includes an exam/treatment room so that the patient can be treated or have a minor procedure performed in a place other than their room to avoid asscciating pain with their own room.
The southeast pod will be shared with the Post-Partum Unit of 9 beds. Between the Post-Partum Unit and the Adolescent Unit will be 6 "swing" beds in groups of 2 beds. These beds will flex from pediatrics to obstetrics on an as needed basis dependent on the respective needs.
Along the south side of the floor are the Child Life Program spaces which are clustered together so that they can be opened up and used as a large event space such as holiday parties, plays, etc. This area will also have access to a terrace which is on the roof of the Day Hospital below.
In the center area of the floor will be the Pediatric Cardio-diagnostics functions. Locating these functions on the floor means that the children need not leave the floor for diagnostic work. In addition, there is a procedure room on the floor.
The Womens Services orientation is to the east side of the floor and the patients and visitors can be directed to the east elevators and the east entrance off Westwoed Plaza Perinatal services will be located on the northeast pod with Fetal Monitoring, Triage, and Ante-pattum rooms co-located with the 6-bed LDRP suite. Immediately adjacent to the LDRP is a C-section suite and the NICU with 24 bassinets. This juxtaposition minimizes the distance between fine NICU and the delivery areas.
The two services will share conference rooms, departmental library space, and an office suite in the center area of the floor, maximizing the utilization of space.
